Cloop — the Cloop desk lamp, one continuous bent profile

It was never the light — it was the mass

Every task lamp on the studio desks had the same fault. Not the light — the mass. A shade, a knuckle, a counterweight and an arm add up to an object that dominates a desk it is only meant to serve.

Strip one back and almost all of its visual weight is the housing built to hide a bulb and the joints built to aim it. And what makes a desk pleasant to work at is not raw output anyway — it is bounced, indirect light. Lumens pointed straight down make the page harder to read, not easier.

Which leaves one way out: if the structure itself emits, there is nothing left to house. The lamp stops being a machine with a light in it and becomes a lit line.

Drawn in a single stroke

Base ring, stem and upper loop are one bent profile. There is no point at which the lamp becomes a different object — which is why, switched off, it reads as a drawing someone left standing on the desk.

The curve is the lamp

An LED strip sits in a channel on the inside face of the upper loop, facing the curve rather than the desk. The light bounces once before it reaches the page, which is what removes the glare — and hides the source completely from a seated eye line.

A pool, not a spotlight

On a desk the lamp throws a soft, even field across an open book without a hard edge and without a bright object anywhere in peripheral vision.

One warm line of metal

A single brass-finish profile runs the whole length so nothing interrupts the gesture: a concealed LED strip inside the bend, a matte weighted base, and sliding collars that adjust the aim without introducing a joint. The only material change in the object is the light itself.

What I'd do next

Prototype the bend as a single metal pass for production, and add a dimming collar so the light is as adjustable as the form.
